Derek from OMERS Ventures gave a talk on what VC’s look for in both companies and founders.
Most of the conversation focused important traits and characteristics when formulating a deal and included: What VC’s look for in a deal or company:
- Large Global Market
- Understand your competitors
- Domain expertise or momentum
What VC’s look for when they meet a founder:
- Drive to succeed
- Creativity
- Able to be extremely self critical
These were all complemented by real world examples of companies which OMERS is currently invested in. Derek left this valuable session with a piece of excellent advice:
“When a VC says ‘No’, use it as an opportunity to work on reasons for them to say ‘Yes’ the next time you ask”
OMERS Ventures is a Canadian Venture Capitals arm of OMERS Pension fund, focused on investing in Canadian technology startups.
